Kennett Square
Comprehensive Plan:
Advancing a Legacy
Known as the Mushroom Capital of the World, Kennett Square (PA) benefited much from tourism and commerce in history. However, development pressure, commuting difficulties, and under-representation of ethnic groups have challenged the borough from building resource sustainability, democracy, and equity.
As a data analyst and graphic designer of the student consultation group, Joyce contributed largely to the land use and zoning analysis and map-drafting. As a team player and organizer, Joyce assisted the discussion with note-taking and insight-synthesizing, while proposing new ideas and learning from group feedbacks.
Keep Austin Resilient
Planning in such a context of climate change, population pressure, and city regions divide, the student consulting group worked around the concept of system planning. This seeks methods for characterizing urban systems, means of cross-departmental collaboration, and design for community cohesiveness across generations.

As a lead of system characterization and data analysis, Joyce helped generate a series of maps that visualize problem priorities in 7 systems; a 5-step methodology to locate study areas that could serve as demo for system thinking in urban planning. As a graphic designer and content writer, Joyce also focused on data visualization and story-telling, especially that in Extreme Weather, Analysis, Site Selection, and Recommendation--Tennehill Branch.

Austin (Tx) attracts increasing amount of settlements than ever for its rich outdoor resources, the relatively affordable housing in the nation, and the liberal spirits in the state. However, the extreme weather due to climate change, especially flood and heat, has damaged properties and threatened life. Meanwhile, due to the population and tech sector growth, new real estate projects put pressure on historical neighborhoods preservation. Moreover, the difference in neighborhood socio-economics has challenged equitable resource and fund allocation.

Fish Farming Project:
Build Resilience for Mmanze
People from Mmanze Parish, a typical rural Kampala (Uganda) area, reached out through Mmanze Center for Rural Development and Training (Mmanze) for developing a community fish farming project. As a remote consultant, Joyce brought this project from ideation to plan and budget proposal . While this project faces funding issues due to the pandemic, more volunteers are attracted by this initiative to collaborate with the local staff to consolidate the goals. If successful, this project is said to provide better nutritional support for the subsistence farming community, supply more job opportunities thus more flexible income source, as well as sustainable ag education training for perspective farms nearby. 2020.
